Honoring Black History: Six Years of Supporting the National Opera House

In honor of Black History Month, Porchlight is proud to make our annual contribution to the National Opera House for the sixth year in a row.

Founded in 1941, the National Opera House- originally known as the National Negro Opera House- was home to the first Black opera company in the United States. At its height, it served as a cultural hub and gathering place for world-renowned artists. Over time, however, the building fell into disrepair and was recently named one of the 11 most endangered historic places in America by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Beyond its artistic significance, the National Opera House played a critical role as a safe haven. During a time of widespread discrimination, Black performers and celebrities- despite their fame- were often barred from hotels and apartments. The house provided them with a place of safety, dignity, and community.

Today, the National Opera House Foundation is working to restore the building into a vibrant center for the arts, an event venue, and a museum honoring its legacy. While the estimated cost of restoration is approximately $5 million, the broader fundraising goal is $20 million to ensure long-term preservation and programming. What once felt out of reach gained new momentum after a transformative $500,000 donation from the R.K. Mellon Foundation, which helped stabilize the structure and renew hope for the project’s future.

“Witnessing the transformation of an important landmark into cultural event space falls right in line with our values. We look forward to looking back a few years from now, and being able to say we were a small part of it,”

Brian Formanek, Porchlight Owner

We felt it was important—once again—to raise awareness and continue supporting this vital cause. Although small compared to others, our hope is that our contribution sparks continued conversation, visibility, and support for a landmark that represents resilience, culture, and history.
