From XL to PeoplesBank Arena: What Hartford’s Venue Revamp Means for Events

PeoplesBank, a Massachusetts-based mutual bank, secured a 10-year naming rights agreement for the arena, with payments starting at $850,000 in the first year and increasing to $2.4 million by the tenth year.  This partnership not only provides significant financial support for the venue but also symbolizes the bank’s commitment to Hartford’s economic growth.

“We believe in Hartford. We believe in the revitalization happening here,” said PeoplesBank CEO Thomas Senecal during the announcement event. He emphasized that the bank’s investment is more than just a branding opportunity; it’s a chance to be part of something larger.

While the name change might seem cosmetic at first glance, it holds real (positive) implications for event professionals, performers, and planners alike.

Enhancing the Arena Experience

The renaming coincides with a $145 million state-funded renovation of the arena, aimed at modernizing the facility to attract more events and visitors. Upgrades include new seating, luxury suites, improved concourses, and enhanced amenities for both performers and attendees.

Governor Lamont highlighted the significance of these developments, stating, “This is a really big deal. It’s just extraordinary what we can do here.”

A Hub for Sports and Entertainment

The PeoplesBank Arena continues to serve as a central venue for sports and entertainment in Connecticut. It hosts the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League and serves as a part-time home for the University of Connecticut’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as the men’s hockey team. The arena also accommodates concerts, conventions, and other large-scale events.

Looking Ahead

The partnership between PeoplesBank and the City of Hartford represents a shared vision for the city’s future. As the arena undergoes its transformation, it stands as a symbol of Hartford’s resilience and commitment to growth. With the support of dedicated partners like PeoplesBank, the city is poised to enhance its cultural and economic landscape for years to come.

What It Means for Event Planning

For those of us in the events world, a venue rebrand can open new doors:

  • Enhanced Exposure: A newly named venue often comes with a marketing push. This surge in attention can benefit event hosts looking to capitalize on fresh buzz.
  • New Amenities: Rebranding often coincides with updates to lighting, sound, seating, or hospitality areas—all things that make a difference when planning a standout event.
  • Community Pride: A name tied to local roots (like a Hartford-based sponsor) often garners regional loyalty, making it easier to draw crowds to events.
  • Branding Alignment: Hosting your event in a freshly renamed venue allows you to align your event’s aesthetic and values with a revitalized space—great for marketing materials and attendee perception.

Bottom Line

The XL Center has long been a staple of Connecticut entertainment. From hockey games and concerts to expos and large-scale gatherings, it’s played host to countless events that have shaped the region’s cultural identity. A name change, especially one backed by local stakeholders, signals more than a fresh coat of paint—it’s often a signal of reinvestment in infrastructure, community engagement, and future-ready programming.
